Unlinked Mentions SEO in 2026: Ahrefs and Moz Workflows

Somewhere right now, a writer is typing your brand name into an article and forgetting the link. Unlinked mentions SEO is the habit of finding those pages, checking that the mention is real and asking for one small edit that turns a plain name into a clickable path to your site. It costs an email instead of a campaign, and in 2026 the same mentions also line up with how often AI search tools name your brand.

This guide covers the part most posts skip. Ahrefs unlinked mentions research now runs through three different tools, Moz unlinked mentions research changed after Moz retired its mention features, and a free route still works if you have patience. If you are still deciding whether Ahrefs fits your budget, our comparison of Google Keyword Planner vs Ahrefs lays out plans and limits, and to keep your outreach on the safe side of Google rules, read black hat SEO vs white hat SEO before you send a single email.

An unlinked mention is a page that names your brand, product or founder without linking to your site. It becomes a link only when the page owner agrees to edit it, so the whole job comes down to finding good candidates and asking well.

Why Unlinked Mentions SEO Still Pays

Start with what Google says, because the answer is less exciting than most guides admit. When John Mueller was asked about unlinked brand mentions, he said he would not assume there is an SEO factor trying to work out where someone mentions your website name, and he added that a mention helps users when they can find your site through it. This Search Engine Journal report on brand mentions and Google covers the exchange. The case for chasing mentions rests on readers and links, not on a secret mention signal.

That still leaves two solid reasons. A link sends curious readers to you and gives crawlers a path to follow, and the writer who named you already knows you exist, so the ask is smaller than a cold pitch. Ahrefs says authors are more likely to add a link when you reach out soon after they publish, which makes speed part of the method.

Mention hunting also doubles as monitoring. Ahrefs points out that watching what people say about you online serves reputation management and influencer work as well as link requests, so the same weekly check pays off twice.

How Ahrefs Finds Them

Ahrefs unlinked mentions research runs through three tools that suit different jobs, and the official Ahrefs guide to unlinked brand mentions describes the core workflow. Pick your route by volume. A small brand can live on one search a week, while a brand with hundreds of monthly mentions needs filters from the start.

Content Explorer Highlight

Search your brand name in Content Explorer, set the mode to In content so the name is matched inside article text, exclude your own site, then use Highlight unlinked domains and enter your domain. Ahrefs says this flags sites that have never linked to you. Add filters for language, Domain Rating and monthly organic traffic so you do not chase pages nobody reads. In the Ahrefs example, a search for its own brand returned more than 15K results, and filtering to English pages on sites with a Domain Rating of 30 or more and at least 50 monthly visits cut that to 558.

Two catches apply. The highlight works at the domain level, so a page can still lack a link when its site links to you somewhere else, and many exported pages already link to you. Ahrefs recommends checking the export with a crawler. In its example, 164 of the 558 pages held true unlinked mentions, roughly 29 percent.

Operator Queries Skipping Exports

Web Explorer lets you do the exclusion inside the query. Ahrefs Academy shows typing the brand name, then adding -outlinkdomain:yourdomain.com to drop pages that already link to you and -site:yourdomain.com to drop your own pages. Ahrefs then suggests choosing One page per domain in Settings, and in that example what is left is the outreach. It saves the export and crawl step from the older workflow, though a quick look at each page is still worth your time.

Alerts and Brand Radar

Mentions alerts watch for new pages. Ahrefs suggests excluding your own domain, choosing a weekly notice and using a capitalized OR to cover misspellings and product names in one alert. One limit matters: an alert lists every mention and does not tell you whether the page links to you, so each result needs a manual check.

Brand Radar is the newer addition. Ahrefs describes mentions as how often your brand name appears in AI answer text and citations as how often AI links to your pages, tracked across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with a web visibility view of the publications and domains citing your brand. It does not replace the link request, but it helps you choose where to ask first.

Where Moz Stands in 2026

Moz unlinked mentions research is where many guides are out of date. In a post dated March 1, 2021, a Moz staff member recalled the earlier decision to sunset Fresh Web Explorer and announced that the Mentions without Links feature in Campaigns, along with the Mentions module in Keyword Explorer, would go away on April 15, 2021. The post said the old functionality no longer delivered the value it once did and promised Link Intersect as a better way to find link wins.

A search for Moz unlinked mentions can still surface tutorials that tell you to open Fresh Web Explorer. Treat them as history.

What Moz offers today is a different job. Link Explorer shows who already links to you, which helps you rule out domains before you email them. Link Intersect finds sites that link to your competitors but not to you, a related opportunity that sits next to mentions. Moz also pointed users to Link Tracking Lists for following opportunities identified through unlinked mentions.

For the mention hunt itself, Moz users need another source, and the Ahrefs or free routes in this guide fit. Bring the list back to Moz to check domains, track outreach in Link Tracking Lists and judge targets with Domain Authority if that is the metric your team uses. At the time of writing in October 2026, no replacement mention report turned up in our research, and Moz can add tools at any time, so check the Moz Pro menu before you rely on this.

Free Methods for Tight Budgets

Plain Google still works. Ahrefs shows a search that names the brand with the intext operator and excludes your own site and social networks with a minus operator for each domain. Google limits how many results you can page through, so narrow by date range. In the Ahrefs example, restricting a search to the past 24 hours dropped it from more than 400K results to fewer than 500.

A Google Alert on your exact brand name suits brands with low mention volume, and it costs nothing. Whichever source you use, you still need a link check. Open the page, search it for your domain and look at the source when the name appears as plain text.

Ahrefs also describes two quick wins that a plain mention search misses. Some writers link to your social profile instead of your site, and some misspell your domain inside the link. Both are easy requests because the writer already tried to link to you.

Sorting Real Opportunities From Noise

A mention is worth an email only when a link would help the reader. Ahrefs gives a blunt example: an article about why sugary drinks harm teeth does not need a link to a soda brand, so asking for one wastes time for the writer and for you.

Rank candidates by four things: how directly the page is about you, how much traffic it earns, how recent the mention is and whether the site already links to you from other pages. Page level matters, because Ahrefs notes that a strong page on a site that already links to you can still be worth pursuing.

Skip pages where the mention is negative, years old or sitting on a thin page that nobody visits. Ahrefs says there is no point pursuing unlinked mentions on low quality pages.

Asking Without Sounding Like a Broker

Keep the email short and specific. Name the page, point to the exact sentence, say which URL you would suggest and explain why it helps readers. Ahrefs adds two rules: offer something extra, such as a typo or broken link you spotted on the same page, and do not push when the site already links to you often.

Never attach a price or a gift. The Google spam policies list exchanging money, goods or services for links and sending a product in return for a post with a link as link spam, and they treat buying or selling links that pass ranking credit as acceptable only when the links carry rel=nofollow or rel=sponsored.

Keep the tone plain and personal. Google finished its September 2026 spam update on October 8 after 13 days and 16 hours, according to Search Engine Journal, and it had not said what the rollout addressed at the time of that report. An unpaid, individual request on a page that already names you is the opposite of a shortcut.

Some mentions will never become links, and that does not make them worthless. In a study of 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found that branded web mentions, linked or unlinked, had the strongest correlation with brand visibility in AI Overviews at 0.664. Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions against 14 for the next quartile down, and 26 percent of brands had none.

Correlation is not cause, since a famous brand attracts both mentions and AI attention. Use the numbers as a reason to track mentions and not as a promise. A practical step is to note which publications keep naming you and which sources AI answers cite, then put those publications first in your outreach queue.

Questions Readers Ask

What are unlinked mentions in SEO?
They are pages that name your brand, product or people without linking to your site. You can ask the owner to add a link.

How do I find unlinked mentions in Ahrefs?
Search your brand in Content Explorer with In content mode and Highlight unlinked domains, use the -outlinkdomain and -site operators in Web Explorer, or set a Mentions alert and check each result by hand.

Does Moz have an unlinked mentions tool?
Not a dedicated one. Moz retired Fresh Web Explorer, then removed Mentions without Links on April 15, 2021, and pointed users to Link Intersect and Link Tracking Lists instead.

Do unlinked mentions help rankings?
Google has not described a mention signal, and John Mueller said he would not assume one exists. A link can still bring readers and a path for crawlers.

How soon should I ask for the link?
Soon. Ahrefs says authors are more likely to add a link when you contact them shortly after publishing, which is why it recommends weekly alerts.

Should I pay for a link?
No. Money for links counts as link spam under the Google spam policies unless the link carries rel=nofollow or rel=sponsored.

How many mentions are really unlinked?
It varies. In Ahrefs examples, 164 of 558 filtered pages held unlinked mentions, and for a very large brand over one week, 329 of 393 pages did not link back.

Conclusion: What to Do Next

Unlinked mentions are worth chasing for reasons that have little to do with a hidden ranking signal. Google has not described one, and John Mueller said he would not assume it exists, so the real return comes from readers who click through and links that crawlers can follow. Ahrefs gives you three ways to find them, through Content Explorer, Web Explorer operators and Mentions alerts, while Moz retired its own mention features in 2021 and now points you to Link Intersect and Link Tracking Lists.

The method itself is small. Pick one brand name and two product names, run one search, check each page for a link and send five honest, unpaid emails while the pages are still fresh. Keep the mentions that never become links on your radar too, since Ahrefs found that branded web mentions line up with AI Overview visibility. Count replies and links added after a month, then adjust the list. Unlinked mentions SEO rewards a steady weekly routine over one big push a year.
